Commander sees the larger task

Commander sits above the squad’s immediate movement and is defined by coordination. That does not mean every player waits for a speech. It means the role connects sectors, support requests and the wider team objective so that individual squads are not solving unrelated problems. A good command call names the sector, the pressure on it and the reason the next move matters. The six maps make that clarity valuable because a bridge, runway, cave, dock or waterway changes the time a squad needs to act.

The Commander role is available to both sides, but the support surface around it is faction-specific. US Forces can connect helicopter fire support and supply drops to a ground request. The NVA can connect buildable tunnel networks to a route or fallback. Command therefore needs to understand the faction being played without treating the asymmetric system as a separate game.

Field note

Squad Leader makes it local

Squad Leader is the local translation of command. Its roster purpose is squad leadership, which means the role should make the next piece of ground legible to the players moving through it. Give the squad a route, a fallback and one reason for the move. On a river map that may be a crossing and a boat lane; at Đắk Tô Airfield it may be a runway sightline and a covered edge; around Huế Outskirts it may be a terrace, industrial base or waterway approach.

The role does not require the loudest voice. It requires a repeatable short call and a willingness to update it. If a tunnel changes the flank, if a supply drop opens a route, if a casualty needs dragging or if a boat blocks the crossing, state the change and issue the next task. This is how the command surface stays connected to movement rather than becoming a layer of commentary above the match.

Field note

A command handoff in practice

A useful command handoff contains a task, a surface and a next report. The Commander can state the sector pressure, the Squad Leader can reduce it to a local move, Recon can name what is visible and the working unit can report whether the route changed. That chain is short enough to use under fire and specific enough to prevent a broad order from becoming several unrelated pushes.

Use the two command records as a starting point, not as a reason to ignore the rest of the roster. Command works when Infantry, Armour, Recon, Mortar Squad and the US helicopter roles can see how their action fits the same request. A new player can contribute by repeating the task accurately and reporting one concrete change from the ground.
