Current build

Arrive with a simple task

Hell Let Loose: Vietnam places a player inside a large team structure, so the first useful question is not how many enemies are visible. Ask what the squad is trying to hold, attack, observe or supply. Squad Leader is the cleanest role for a player who already understands the voice rhythm; Rifleman is a dependable line choice; Medic, Engineer, Grenadier, Specialist and Machine Gunner each give an infantry squad a clear purpose. Recon, Armour and Mortar Squad are separate surfaces with their own communication needs.

The current roster also includes Commander, Logistics Officer and Pilot. Logistics Officer and Pilot are US-only roles tied to helicopter operations, while Commander is listed for both sides. A first deployment does not require taking the most specialized seat. It requires recognizing when the team needs a simple rifle, a casualty recovery action, a construction task, observation, mortar support or a transport and supply connection. Select the role that matches the request you can hear, then keep that request visible as the match changes.

Field note

Read the ground before the firefight

The launch maps ask for different first scans. At Thanh Hóa Bridge, identify the river and bridge approaches before crossing. Huế Outskirts can move between terraced farms, jungle, industrial bases and waterways, so a straight line may expose the squad to several surfaces at once. Vạn Tường makes boats and river networks part of the approach. Quảng Ngãi pairs monsoon flooding with rocky cliffs, caves, bamboo and open lowlands. Đắk Tô Airfield is defined by its long runway and open sightlines. Cam Ranh Port combines docks, dunes and logistics space.

Use those descriptions as callout language rather than scenery labels. Say runway when you need a long sightline covered. Say cave when the next movement can disappear below the surface. Say dock, bridge or boat lane when the route is constrained by water. A squad that names the surface can place smoke, cover a crossing and choose a fallback point faster than one that only repeats a compass direction. Terrain is the first layer of battle doctrine because it changes how quickly a role can do its job.

Field note

Move, recover, repeat

Enhanced movement broadens the recovery routine. Swimming can open a water approach, climbing can turn a boundary into a route, fast crawling reduces a silhouette and dragging an injured player gives a squad a way to move a casualty out of the immediate line. These actions do not remove danger. They create a few more choices between standing still and abandoning the player. Call the action you are taking so the squad understands why a marker or body is moving away from the expected line.

The same rhythm applies to helicopters and tunnels. US helicopter operations connect an aerial role to a ground request for fire support or supplies. NVA tunnel networks connect a buildable support point to the faction’s movement and defense plan. A player arriving from another Hell Let Loose title can use the familiar command-and-squad structure while learning that the most important route may be above, below or across water. Treat each new surface as a communication problem first and a shooting problem second.

The five checks before ready

First, confirm the current build and platform context so a store question does not become a match question. Second, join the squad channel and identify the squad task in one sentence. Third, choose a role that answers that task instead of duplicating a full line of the same class. Fourth, read the nearest terrain surface and name a route plus a fallback. Fifth, after the first contact, report what changed: a lost bridge, a visible runway, a tunnel entrance, a boat movement or a wounded teammate. Those five checks turn a first match into a routine that can survive a bad opening.

The Getting Started tutorial is part of the achievement record, and the launch surface also lists achievements for completing multiple tutorials. Finish the tutorial before using a busy public match to test every movement action. Then keep the checklist on this page beside your first deployment. It is deliberately short: current boundary, squad role, tutorial, terrain, voice-ready match. When all five are familiar, move to Roles for a deeper unit choice or Battle doctrine for the map and mode decisions that shape the next deployment.

Field note

Use the next match as a field note

After a match, record one route that worked, one route that failed and one request that arrived too late. A useful note is concrete: the squad crossed the river under boat pressure, the runway sightline needed smoke, a tunnel supported a flank, or a dragged casualty reached cover. Avoid turning the note into a score report. The purpose is to build a shared vocabulary that helps the next Squad Leader make a decision before the same surface becomes a surprise.

From there, the dossier branches cleanly. Factions explains the asymmetry between US Forces and the NVA. Systems describes the mechanics that changed your movement. Vehicles separates helicopters from patrol boats. Modes clarifies Warfare and Offensive. The official update timeline gives release context, while Support keeps the PC target visible. First deployment is complete when the player can choose the next question without needing another generic beginner page. That small record also gives the next squad a shared starting point before first contact and keeps the discussion tied to terrain.
