Air support is a squad connection

A helicopter matters because it connects a request on the ground to an action above it. A squad does not need to treat aerial fire support as a spectacle; it needs to describe the pressure point, the route it wants to open and the time window in which the support will help. Supply drops use the same discipline. The best request is tied to a position, a fallback or the next sector task rather than a general call for help.

The US-only role split makes that connection legible. Logistics Officer is associated with helicopter logistics, while Pilot is associated with helicopter operation. Those roles do not replace the Squad Leader or Commander. They give the US side a dedicated way to move support into the shared chain of command, which becomes especially valuable around open runway sightlines, river crossings and the exposed approaches around a port.

Field note

The ground still wins the sector

The air surface only creates an opening. Infantry has to move through it, Recon has to observe it, Armour has to use the available lane and Mortar Squad has to place pressure where the command plan requires it. A US squad can therefore be air-aware without becoming air-dependent. The strongest callout pairs the support request with the ground action: smoke the runway, hold the bridge end, cover the dock, recover the casualty or clear the next approach.

Shared roles are the bridge between faction identity and match rhythm. Rifleman gives a new player a stable line role, Engineer answers construction and field support, Medic answers casualty recovery, and Squad Leader keeps the local plan readable. Read the role roster before taking a specialist slot so the helicopter surface adds a capability instead of pulling another needed role out of the squad.

US map reading

The six launch battlefields offer different reasons to call for air or supplies. Đắk Tô Airfield’s runway and open ground make timing and concealment visible. Thanh Hóa Bridge turns support into a crossing problem. Cam Ranh Port adds docks, dunes and logistics space. Huế Outskirts and Vạn Tường mix water and built surfaces, while Quảng Ngãi combines flooding, cliffs, caves and bamboo. Name the surface first, then ask whether an aerial action changes the route enough for infantry to use it.

For a first US deployment, choose a shared ground role, listen for the air request and report the result. If the support opens a lane, move; if it draws attention, use the change to reposition; if it does not solve the route, return to cover and give the squad a new terrain callout. US Forces are most readable when the helicopter system is treated as part of the chain of command rather than a separate mini-game.

Field note

A ground result for every air request

An air request should end with a ground observation. Say whether the support opened the runway edge, forced a defender away from the bridge, covered a supply route or simply revealed that the approach was too exposed. This result gives the Commander and Squad Leader something to do with the information. Infantry can move through a changed lane, Recon can watch the new angle, Armour can test the pressure and Medic can recover players who were caught during the transition.

The same habit keeps the US roster approachable for a first match. A player does not need to understand every aviation decision before joining the line. Listen for the request, identify the surface it concerns and report the result in one sentence. When the ground team connects that sentence to its next action, helicopters become part of the faction’s coordination loop rather than a detached feature that only a specialist can read.
